"Se abrirĂ¡n las grandes Alamedas" by Elizabeth Neira
"Se abrirĂ¡n las grandes Alamedas" is a performance by chilean artist and poet Elizabeth Neira.
The words are Salvador Allende’s Last Words to the Nation, a speech delivered at 9:10 am on September 11, 1973 in the midst on an ultimately successful US-sponsored coup d’etat against the democratically-elected government. Barricaded inside La Moneda, the presidential palace, President Allende gave his life defending Chilean democracy.

The Periodic Table of Kink
quote [Brilliant! Hilarious! Unless you’re in the UK… I’m so sorry, UK. Certain people in your government appear to defy Darwinism. Still, UberKinky’s [UK] Government Approved Periodic Table of Kink (large image) is really fun.
(via Violet Blue)
UberKinky explains it best:
On Tuesday 1 December, the Audiovisual Media Services Regulations 2014 introduced a series of restrictions on the pornography produced and sold in the UK. Now video on demand must adhere to the same strict criteria as DVDs, movies and TV shows. As a result, a number of sexual acts have been deemed too ‘harmful’ or ‘dangerous’ for us to watch, and have thus been banned from our screens altogether (if produced/provided in the UK). The UK is now subject to some of the most severe content restrictions in Europe.
(…) Now, with the new pornographic laws in place, we decided to update our UberKinky Periodic Table of Kink to reflect this. So Check out our all new Government Approved Periodic Table of Kink today and find out which of your favourite fetishes have been outlawed!
Remember; it’s better to educate than regulate…
“Pornography is the canary in the coalmine of free speech: it is the first freedom to die. If this assault on liberty is allowed to go unchallenged, other freedoms will fall as a consequence.” - Myles Jackman, legal adviser for Backlash.

The mistery of Numbers station
A numbers station is a type of shortwave radio station characterized by unusual broadcasts, often created by artificially generated voices reciting streams of numbers, words, letters, tunes or Morse code. They are transmitted in a wide variety of languages and the voices are usually female, although sometimes men's or children's voices are used.... more and more.
The Conet Project - Recordings of Shortwave Numbers Stations.
And also... How to Listen to Real Spy Broadcasts Right Now.
According to the notes of The Conet Project, which has compiled recordings of these transmissions, numbers stations have been reported since World War I. If accurate, this would count numbers stations among the earliest radio broadcasts. It has long been speculated, and was argued in court in one case, that these stations operate as a simple and foolproof method for government agencies to communicate with spies working undercover. According to this theory, the messages are encrypted with a one-time pad, to avoid any risk of decryption by the enemy. As evidence, numbers stations have changed details of their broadcasts or produced special, nonscheduled broadcasts coincident with extraordinary political events, such as the August Coup of 1991 in the Soviet Union.

George W. Bush painter of puppies
"He started off painting dogs. I think he said he painted 50 dogs," says painting teacher Bonnie Flood of her student, George W. Bush.
There's video. As you may recall, images of the former president's paintings also showed up in a series of hacked emails published last month by "Guccifer." Those images included "purported self-portraits of the 43rd president in the shower and the bath".
Washington Post Art and Architecture Critic Philip Kennicott critiques the work here. The hacked work, not to be confused with the work of a hack.

The House in the Middle of the Road

Homeowners Luo Baogen and his wife refused to allow the government to demolish their home in Wenling, Zhejiang province, China, claiming the relocation compensation offered would not be enough to cover the cost of rebuilding. The neighboring homes were dismantled, and, bizarrely, the road was built around the intact home, leaving it as an island in a river of new asphalt. (more)

Playing Civilization II for 10 years

I've been playing the same game of Civilization II for 10 years. Though long outdated, I grew fascinated with this particular game because by the time Civ III was released, I was already well into the distant future. I then thought that it might be interesting to see just how far into the future I could get and see what the ramifications would be. Naturally I play other games and have a life, but I often return to this game when I'm not doing anything and carry on. The results are as follows:
- The world is a hellish nightmare of suffering and devastation.
- There are 3 remaining super nations in the year 3991 A.D, each competing
for the scant resources left on the planet after dozens of nuclear wars
have rendered vast swaths of the world uninhabitable wastelands.

The Linder Gallery

LINK quote [Created almost four hundred years ago as an enigma, the Linder Gallery is a remarkable painting that brings the worlds of art and science into collision. Executed in oil on copper, the painting depicts the interior of a picture gallery with a collection of paintings by Flemish, Dutch and Italian artists, an assortment of sculpture and an impressive selection of astronomical and mathematical instruments. The gallery, with a vaulted ceiling, looks out over a formal garden with a fountain. In the foreground is a bearded old man with a young woman lying in his lap].
