PART 1 - PART 2 quote [On the outskirts of Taipei, Taiwan is an abandoned housing project. I think they were built in the early 80's as cheap housing that could expand vertically while maintaining a very small footprint. The 4 circular pods made it easy to manufacture meanwhile providing it's occupants with plenty of space. I also found some questionable info on its location. The riverbed on one side, the hills on the opposite, the materials used to build it, and the fact that they expand upwards were all intentional to satisfy traditional Chinese living methodology of the 5 elements].

The Gazelena Project

The Gazelena Project - Story + video quote [New York University students Allistar Peters and Meng Li came up with the "breastcam" as part of a thesis project. Ms Li nips out to the city's streets in a dress fitted with cameras to catch passing oglers in the act, and the double-C TV footage is broadcast over the web. Mr Peters said the idea was not to affront those who fail to keep their eyes above his bosom friend's neckline but to address the issue of public surveillance].

Tree Houses

LINK quote [...after a quick bout of googling i discovered the origin of the larger photo: it was taken by darius kinsey, a guy i’d previously been unaware of, who was a ‘prolific photographer of logging activities in the pacific northwest’. this particular photograph shows a cedar stump house in edgecomb, washington, dates back to 1901 and has instantly become one of my favourites].

Five things humans no longer need

LINK quote [Vestigial organs are parts of the body that once had a function but are now more-or-less useless. Probably the most famous example is the appendix, though it is now an open question whether the appendix is really vestigial. The idea that we are carrying around useless relics of our evolutionary past has long fascinated scientists and laypeople alike].

Life with two anteaters in the house
HomePage - Photos - Movies quote [Tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla) is a smaller species of anteaters, but some would say they are the "perfect" anteaters - just the right size, and just the right amount of attitude. They are most closely related to sloths and armadillos, but seeing these pictures will make you wonder if you aren't related to them by any chance. It seems they know how special they look, and don't mind posing in sweaters and other handmade clothes].

Prehistoric Erotic Art

At Arte Rupestre (Rock Art) there's an interesting page about Prehistoric Erotic Art and Prehistoric Venuses: quote [The fact that numerous examples like that of a female figure. All generally exhibiting the same essential characteristics - large stomachs and breasts, featureless faces, minuscule or missing feet - have been found over a broad geographical area ranging from France to Siberia. That suggests that some system of shared understanding and perception of a particular type of woman existed during the Paleolithic].

Brain visualized as an island map

LINK quote [The above map's original d ata was created from a reference photo of a real human brain which was used to build the 3d terrain. This digital elevation model was then used to create contour line data, relief shading and to plan where the roads and features should be placed for map compilation. Real New Zealand public domain data was then added for the surrounding islands].

Is that a rock or a man on Mars?

LINK quote [Pictures of Big Foot, the Loch Ness monster, and the Face on Mars may have new company. The image, shown here, was grabbed from panoramic images taken by Spirit November 6-9, 2007].

The Last Supper in Detail

LINK The Last Supper has been rendered as a 16 million pixel digital image. That's 1,600 times larger than images taken with a 10-megapixel camera. The 16-billion-pixel image allows you to zoom down to a millimeter square's worth of ancient paint.

The body as machine

Gallery 1 - Gallery 2 quote [In the early 20th century, Fritz Kahn produced a succession of books on the inner workings of the human body, using visual metaphors drawn from industrial society—assembly lines, internal combustion engines, refineries, dynamos, telephones, etc. The body, in Kahn’s work, was "modern" and productive, a theme visually emphasized through modernist artwork. Though his books sold well, his Jewishness, and public advocacy of progressive reform, made him a target for Nazi attacks. Rescued by American agent Varian Fry, along with other prominent Jewish scientists and intellectuals, he was brought to America in 1940].

Ames Room

LINK quote [Why do the two identical twins in this room appear to be drastically different in size? The distorted room seen above is named after the American ophthalmologist Adelbert Ames, Jr., who first constructed such a room in 1946. He based his design on a concept originally conceived by Hermann Helmholtz in the late 19th century. There are two illusions associated with the Ames Room. First the room appears cubic when viewed monocularly from a special viewing point (the true shape of the room is trapezoidal). Secondly, within an Ames Room people or objects can appear to grow or shrink when moving from one corner to the other].
