The Brutality of a Toxic Love

quote [Julia Fox, artist and head designer of Franziska Fox, recently released a graphic, autobiographical art book titled Heartburn/Nausea. The book acts as a character sketch, exposing flashes of intimate details that add up to mold a vision of a troubled girl. There is no hesitation between honesty and story telling, as this book is a collection of literal documents from the artist’s life. The book is extremely raw and almost devastatingly personal. She invites us into her own past, for just a moment, allowing us to truly have an experience through her memories].
‘I just wanted to take something bad and make it good. For myself, but also for anyone else that has been in a fucked up situation’ Julia Fox

quote [Potluck 100 | Paintings for Ants is a project by Cape Town-based miniaturist painter Lorraine Loots. The project follows on 2013's 365 Paintings for Ants and 2014's 365 Postcards for Ants.

A collection of 100 miniatures are to be painted throughout 2015. These will be painted over 25 weeks, on themed days, namely: Microcosm Mondays, Tiny Tuesdays, Fursdays and Free Fridays. All 100 original paintings will be auctioned on Instagram, framed in raw wood and exhibited, before being sent to their owners in February 2016. A limited edition of 10 prints will be released for each of the 100 paintings. The prints will be released later in the year].

Books: The Fetish Collection by Paul Burns

Published by The Aboulia Press and distributed via Amazon and Kobo, The Fetish Collection is a book for those who would like to read more about sexual variation.
Written by Paul Burns "...the thirteen short stories and novella that make up The Fetish Collection are very varied other than each including at least one unusual sexual preference. The characters deal with issues at different stages of life including a boy who can’t understand why men stare at his mother, a student grappling with honesty, a priest who no longer has faith, grief in old age and a woman facing imminent death. Some stories feature explicit sexual scenes, others are coyer. Surprises abound".

Dust & Grooves

Dust & Grooves: Adventures in Record Collecting is an inside look into the world of vinyl record collectors in the most intimate of environments—their record rooms. It all started out several years ago as nothing more than a way for photographer Eilon Paz to make use of his idle hours. Adrift in Brooklyn after emigrating from Israel, Eilon—a record collector on the side—thought it might be fun to start taking photos of people whose record collections were both larger and weirder than his own.

Books: Illusions of the Body by Gracie Hagen

Our beloved Chicago-based photographer Gracie Hagen released an amazing new book featuring her photography series titled Illusions of the Body.

The original photographic serie Illusions of the Body is "...made to tackle the supposed norms of what we think our bodies are supposed to look like. Most of us realize that the media displays only the prettiest photos of people, yet we compare ourselves to those images. We never get to see those photos juxtaposed against a picture of that same person looking unflattering. That contrast would help a lot of body image issues we as a culture have" explains Gracie Hagen.

The book (Full Color, 100 pages, Bound Softcover, Matte Cover Finish, 8.5”x11”) includes 17 never before released images and all advance purchases will be numbered and signed by the artist (Limited Edition Signed Pre-Order $50 unsigned post release $60 Books will be shipped May 1st).

You can buy the book directly @ Gracie Hagen website or meet the artist at the book Launch Party (April 26th, 2014 at 8pm -11pm) Forte Framing and Gallery in Chicago.

Come pick up a copy and get it signed by the artist!

Interactive Chart of Biblical Contradictions

quote [A few years ago, computer science whiz Chris Harrison created a beautiful visualization linking up every cross reference in the Bible. So, for example, if a verse in the New Testament referred back to a verse in the Old Testament, there was an arc drawn between the two chapters they were in (the vertical lines at the bottom represent the number of verses in that chapter). Turns out there are 63,779 cross references in the Bible (and that many arcs in the image)! If it’s any indication of how complex this image is, the high-resolution version is more than 100MB large.

In 2009, graphic designer Andy Marlow used Harrison’s work as his inspiration to created a similar visual for Sam Harris‘ Reason Project. This time, though, he only included arcs representing contradictions in the Bible.

Now, computer programmer Daniel G. Taylor has taken all that data and turned it into a visual masterpiece.
His website, BibViz (Bible Visualization), gives you the same linking arcs as before, but when you hover over one of them, it lights up and tells you in the upper right-hand corner of the screen which verses are being linked together. Click on an arc and it takes you directly to those verses as compiled in the Skeptics Annotated Bible]

Barbara Nitke: American Ecstasy Book

American Ecstasy is a memoir in pictures and words of the twelve years photographer Barbara Nitke spent shooting stills on porn movie sets in New York City. [Photo Gallery].
The book takes place in the 1980's at the end of the Golden Age of Porn, as the industry transitioned from high budget, scripted film productions to smaller and ever cheaper video shoots. Nitke's images reveal the contradictions inherent in the business - great beauty, tinged with sadness, punctuated by surreal silliness. As she chronicles the sights and sounds of life on the sets, her stories also reveal her own struggle to come to terms with the end of her marriage and her fascination with the sexual outlaws of the porn world. Among the porn stars featured are Ron Jeremy, Vanessa del Rio, Nina Hartley, Sharon Mitchell, Sharon Kane, Siobhan Hunter, Jeanna Fine, Damian Cashmere, Tasha Voux, and many more. Directors include Henri Pachard, Candida Royalle, Lasse Braun and others. American Ecstasy is now available online.
