Abelanet's Ladies Riding the Paris Metro

LINK quote [Paris Metro authorities, the RATP, are conducting an inquiry to find out how photographer Jam Abelanet was able to take these arty shots of nekked babes posed in the Metro. Be photoshopped wouldn't it? Pretty cool though. More here at Jam's site. The book is out this week. Title? Fantaisies Souterraines - Underground Fantasies. So my question is - if it has indeed been photoshopped - how did he do it? After hours? This shot particularly. The photographer reckons he took every shot in situ either early in the morning or late at night].

Tom Brinkmann's Bad Mags

LINK quote [Beyond that Bad Mags is a book devoted to strange, bizarre and peripheral magazines because the back alleys of the publishing industry have been little explored in print. In most cases there isn't any information readily available, limited only to the information given in the periodical itself].

Focus on Hallucinogens

LINK quote [Focus on Hallucinogens: This is a little gem I've held onto since my friends Ken and Glen mailed it to me as part of a care package when I was working in Alaska after high school. It's from 1991 and out of print but still in near-perfect condition. I wrote children's science books for two years but never wrote one as fun or useful as this. It explains to 9-year-olds everything from neurons to shamans. Rad!].

The outrageously politically incorrect adverts

LINK quote [In a politically correct age, they seem like outrageous anachronisms. And there is no doubt these adverts - many taken from the first half of the last century - reveal just how much women used to be caricatured as downtrodden housewives or hair-brained office girls. Now, a new book - You Mean A Woman Can Open It?: The Woman's Place In The Classic Age Of Advertising - brings together images which would surely cause a howl of protest if they were released today].

Kern Takes Action

quote [Action is Richard Kern's most revealing book yet. For 280 pages we careen through the life of Kern, accompanied by dozens of energetic, fun-loving, clothes-dropping exhibitionists. The New York Times says: "These photographs may strike some people as sexist and others as sexy. Either way they are uncommonly visceral". More Action: Taschen Books - Saatchi Online].

The art of Fludd

LINK quote [...this isn’t actually comics, but it is a lovely series of artworks from a Rosicrucian, Robert Fludd. The BibliOdyssey blog has a number of fine examples of these 17th century illustrations from “De Naturae Simia”. I think this one of a chap enjoying a nice walk under the river is one of my favourites].

Thomas Allen: Pop up lust

quote [Inspired by a View-Master and “pop-up” books as a child, Thomas Allen became used thrift store books and pulp fiction paperbacks to recreate these 3D experiences. Allen gently cuts around the shape of his figures and brings them to life by using detailed lighting and a thin focus. Pulled and positioned, their intended drama comes to life. In his latest body of work, Allen tells stories of love and desire, voyeurism, homoeroticism, and unrequited love. Catch up with his pin-ups and lusty guys at the Foley Gallery until March 3].

The Erotica Bibliophile

LINK quote [The Erotica Bibliophile is an ongoing and ever expanding research project I started back in 2003 when I first became obsessed with the history of European erotica and, quickly thereafter, the publishers and artists who were part of the clandestine world of "pornography" during the 19th and very early 20th centuries. Many of the important erotica illustrators active during that period are represented here through their drawings as well as many detailed check-lists of publications that contain that artist's work; artists which include: Martin van Maele, Felicien Rops, Luc Lafnet, Louis Maltese, Paul Avril, etc.

Madonna and the Sex Book

Wikipedia - The Sex Book. quote [Sex is the title of a highly-designed coffee table book written by Madonna with photographs by Steven Meisel Studio and film frames shot by Fabien Baron, released October 21, 1992 by Warner Books. The book was released by Madonna as an accompaniment to her fifth studio album Erotica. The extremely controversial book featured strong adult content and softcore pornographic photographs depicting simulations of sexual acts, which included lesbianism, male homosexuality, sadomasochism, anilingus, and rape. Madonna wrote all of the erotica in the book as a character named Mistress Dita, inspired by the silent film actress Dita Parlo].
