Gunkanjima: Ruins of a Forbidden Island

At Unscathed Corpse we love abandoned places! The last one we discover is Gunkanjima, a deserted island of concrete ruins slowly crumbling away off the West coast of Japan. Travellers have long been forbidden to land there and view the secrets within its walls. But with an awesome guide and a little luck, Michael Gakuran was able to do just that. And more ruins by Michael Gakuran here!!!

The Abandoned City San Zhi

PART 1 - PART 2 quote [On the outskirts of Taipei, Taiwan is an abandoned housing project. I think they were built in the early 80's as cheap housing that could expand vertically while maintaining a very small footprint. The 4 circular pods made it easy to manufacture meanwhile providing it's occupants with plenty of space. I also found some questionable info on its location. The riverbed on one side, the hills on the opposite, the materials used to build it, and the fact that they expand upwards were all intentional to satisfy traditional Chinese living methodology of the 5 elements].

An Abandoned City

LINK quote [photo-session of an abandoned city. When the Soviet Union collapsed, government didn’t have much funds to support some small cities around strategically import objects. People of these cities were left all by themselves. Nobody could support them because any communication with this places terminated after the army decided that they now don’t have money to support those objects].

In Rooms by Brittany Markert
quote [In-Rooms, her current photography project, utilizes the confined and often anonymous space of a room to spotlight the emotional and surreal aspects of the human experience. Growing up, she had a fascination with abandoned buildings and hotel rooms, intrigued by the mysterious histories and the various characters that had once occupied it. Her portraits and narratives similarly channel the history of emotion and multitude of personalities that exists within each of her subjects].

A Drone Over Chernobyl
Postcards from Pripyat, Chernobyl by Danny Cooke who earlier this year had the opportunity to visit Chernobyl whilst working for CBS News on a '60 Minutes' episode which aired on Nov. 23, 2014. Bob Simon is the correspondent. Michael Gavshon and David Levine, producers.
quote [Chernobyl is one of the most interesting and dangerous places I've been. The nuclear disaster, which happened in 1986 (the year after I was born), had an effect on so many people, including my family when we lived in Italy. The nuclear dust clouds swept westward towards us. The Italian police went round and threw away all the local produce and my mother rushed out to purchase as much tinned milk as possible to feed me, her infant son.
It caused so much distress hundreds of miles away, so I can't imagine how terrifying it would have been for the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian citizens who were forced to evacuate.
During my stay, I met so many amazing people, one of whom was my guide Yevgen, also known as a 'Stalker'. We spent the week together exploring Chernobyl and the nearby abandoned city of Pripyat. There was something serene, yet highly disturbing about this place. Time has stood still and there are memories of past happenings floating around us.
Armed with a camera and a dosimeter geiger counter I explored...].

Star Wars Tatooine locations today
quote [Evidently, the sets built for the original Star Wars famed Tatooine location were simply abandoned. Beautiful to look at, impressive in how well they've held up and are instantly recognizable; these well-built shelters appear to have attracted quite an interesting slice of Tunisian culture to move on in. I'm sure there must be a great story that went into their design and build.

Abandoned Old Masters Paintings

In this fascinating series of works, Hungarian new media artist Bence Hajdu has removed the figures from a series of Old Master paintings with such precision that it’s almost hard to believe. While some compositions, like Jacques-Louis David’s “Oath of the Horatii” (1784) seem perfectly suited to such background reconstruction (see its clean, minimal lines and crisp shadows), others like Claude Lorrain’s “Seaport with the Embarkation of St. Ursula” (1641) seem like a more difficult selection, because of the picky details — in this case, waves and small scattered figures.

LINK quote [I had for a while a long statement that attempted to explain who I am and why do I do what I do. It made sense to write it. I had just turned my life upside down: I abandoned my job and profesional career to become a photographer and moved back to my hometown after 4 years abroad. I needed to understand and make sense of my life to whistand the vertigo and the trepidation I was experiencing].

Dean Fidelman: Naked Rock Climbing

Article - Dean Fidelman quote [It is a breathtaking - and death-defying feat - which redefines the term extreme sport. Battling both gravity and the elements, the climber claws her way up a granite boulder by just her fingertips. For most, the lack of ropes and safety equipment would be a perilous step too far. But this woman has gone even further and abandoned her clothes to take part in the new sport of naked rock climbing].

100 Abandoned Houses by Kevin Bauman

LINK quote [I have developed an interest in the interaction between man and environment. Whether the urban decay associated with Detroit, or the mountains of the western United States, my focus has been and continues to be on the landscape. My landscapes, however, do not always reflect the idyllic scene most often portrayed by the traditional landscape photograph or painting, but ranges from serene Lake Superior sunsets to chaotic post-industrial landscapes of urban Detroit].

LINK quote [In an abandoned building, I watched while Jenna Jameson and T. T. Boy had sex that night. T. T. Boy looked like a construction worker trying to run a jackhammer through cement. After the pop shot, the P.A. stepped forward because his job was handing T. T. Boy a paper towel. Not long ago, I came across a photo from the set of a porn movie. The girl in the picture is a porn star. Her eyes are red. Her mouth is agape].

The Soviet Roadside Bus-stop

LINK quote [For the most part Soviet architecture and design is remembered for its heavy block buildings and functionally Spartan designs. Its overpowering desire for conformity left little room for individual creative freedom. A notable exceptions to this is in the transportation sector. One can admire this creativity in the Metro stations of cities like Moscow and Tashkent where the coldness and sterility of typical soviet urban architecture is abandoned and costs are not spared as creative freedom is unleashed. While many of us are aware of the elaborate splendor of the Moscow underground, it is easy to overlook the phenomenon of the common roadside bus stop as an example of soviet art and design letting loose and becoming a little weird and crazy].
