FUNLAND: Pleasures & Perils of the Erotic Fairground

FUNLAND: Pleasures and Perils of the Erotic Fairground, an art installation by renowned London-based conceptual artist duo Bompas and Parr, features a selection of “carnival attractions” for audiences to enjoy and experience while they contemplate the sexual subtext of carnivals.

This immersive exhibition, commissioned by the Museum of Sex (New York), features five “attractions” designed to stimulate all five senses in both subtle and not-so-subtle ways. Physical, visual and olfactory experiences are utilized to give the audience a breathless rush of endorphins (similar to those released at the point of orgasm), challenge their strength and agility, and allow them to compete with and impress friends and lovers, as well as other patrons.

Sand Castles By Calvin Seibert

New York-based artist Calvin Seibert builds elaborate architectural sand castles.
quote [Building "sandcastles" is a bit of a test. Nature will always be against you and time is always running out. Having to think fast and to bring it all together in the end is what I like about it.
I rarely start with a plan, just a vague notion of trying to do something different each time. Once I begin building and forms take shape I can start to see where things are going and either follow that road or attempt to contradict it with something unexpected.
In my mind they are always mash-ups of influences and ideas. I see a castle, a fishing village, a modernist sculpture, a stage set for the oscars all at once.
When they are successful they don't feel contained or finished. They become organic machines that might grow and expand. I am always adding just one more bit and if time allowed I wouldn't stop].

Mount Huashan: World’s Most Dangerous Hiking Trail

quote [As wonderful as Chinese tea is, it is definitely not something you’d closely associate with exhilaration, adrenaline and the fear of death. Mount Huashan in China, however, manages to bring all of these things together by featuring a death-defying cliff-side mountain climb that brings daring visitors to a tea house 2,160 m (7,087 ft) up on the mountain’s southern peak].

Alex Chinneck's Incredible Houses

Alex Chinneck is a London based artist and designer working on imaginative buildings and impossible architecture.
From the Knees of my Nose to the Belly of my Toes is a new piece of art created as part of the annual Merge Festival in London. By remodeling the brick exterior and exposing the building’s top floor, Chinneck has altered the facade of the building to look as though it has become a single sheet and slid from the rest of the house.

Tianmen cave: a Glass Sky Walk

quoted via Jared Miles [One of the main attractions of Tianmen Mountain is Tianmen cave, which is technically not a cave. Rather, it is a water-eroded hole in the cliff face, with the highest elevation of it's kind in the world. It can be seen in the image above. Tianmen Mountain is able to lay claim to the longest cableway in the world, spanning a distance of 7455 metres along, over a rise of 1300 kilometres. If the altitude wasn't enough to dissuade you, the adrenaline-junkies that likely run the development of the park have created The Walk of Faith, a journey consisting of several kilometres of glass walkways squared against the cliff face. 10 Creepiest Abandoned Water Parks on Earth

The 10 Creepiest Abandoned Water Parks on Earth. quote [The water slide glistens in the sun but there are no laughing children waiting in line to come speeding down from the top. In fact, barely a sound can be heard. The whole water park is bathed in eerie silence. Is it because it’s too cold – because the park closed already for winter? No, the sense of abandonment and desolation runs deeper].

The House in the Middle of the Road

Homeowners Luo Baogen and his wife refused to allow the government to demolish their home in Wenling, Zhejiang province, China, claiming the relocation compensation offered would not be enough to cover the cost of rebuilding. The neighboring homes were dismantled, and, bizarrely, the road was built around the intact home, leaving it as an island in a river of new asphalt. (more)

Star Wars Tatooine locations today

quote [Evidently, the sets built for the original Star Wars famed Tatooine location were simply abandoned. Beautiful to look at, impressive in how well they've held up and are instantly recognizable; these well-built shelters appear to have attracted quite an interesting slice of Tunisian culture to move on in. I'm sure there must be a great story that went into their design and build.

Gunkanjima: Ruins of a Forbidden Island

At Unscathed Corpse we love abandoned places! The last one we discover is Gunkanjima, a deserted island of concrete ruins slowly crumbling away off the West coast of Japan. Travellers have long been forbidden to land there and view the secrets within its walls. But with an awesome guide and a little luck, Michael Gakuran was able to do just that. And more ruins by Michael Gakuran here!!!
